The Tower of Babel (Bengal Government Secretariat, The Gazetteer of Sikhim, 1894)

And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the Lord scat

Languages of the Book of Daniel (Schaff, A Dictionary of the Bible, 1880)

Image
Type: a quote Sub-type: a fact Relevance: prophecy Text: Book of Daniel [...] The book is written in prose, but not in the same language throughout. The introduction, chs. 1 - 2 :4, first clause, is written in Hebrew, but from the second clause of the fourth verse of the second chapter to the end of ch. 7 it is in Aramaic, called Syriac in that verse. From the beginning of ch. 8 to the end, in which part the visions are related in the first person, the language is Hebrew. Daniel 2 and 7, parallels!

Image
Type: a study Relevance: prophecy Text:  (Please read Daniel 2:31-45 ; 7:2-27 ) Recall the structure of Daniel 2-7, a chiasm! Daniel 2 and 7 parallel one another in theme, in the theme of prophecy. Might they parallel one another in other ways? Note the following parallels between the two visions: 1. - Daniel 2 contains FOUR  metals and Daniel 7 FOUR beasts. "This image’s head was of fine  gold , his breast and his arms of  silver , his belly and his thighs of  brass , His legs of  iron , his feet part of iron..."  Daniel 2:32,33 "The first was like a lion ... And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear ... After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard ... After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast , dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly..." Daniel 7:4-7 2. - Daniel 2 contains TWO non-metals (contrasted to the 4 metals) and Daniel 7 TWO humans/human-like (contrasted to the 4 beasts).

The Structure (or Message) of Daniel 2-7: A Weapon for Our Times

Image
Type: a study Relevance: prophecy Text: (Please read all of the Book of Daniel! ) Recall the contents of the 12 chapters of the book of Daniel. (Perhaps the above image will help you remember by providing a few hints.) Fact: the Book of Daniel is written in two languages! Why? Roughly speaking, chapters 1 and 8-12 are in Hebrew and chapters 2-7 are in Aramaic. Why though? Is it an accident? Does it indicate multiple authorship? Why? Is there method/purpose in the construction of the Book of Daniel? Yes! Focusing on chapters 2-7. Notice the chronological order of the chapters of Daniel 2-7. Chapter 2 occurs first , in Nebuchadnezzar's 2nd year. Chapter 3 occurs second , as this chapter's golden statue is a rebellious act, on Nebuchadnezzar's part, in response to the statue of Daniel 2. Chapter 4 occurs third , as it is the climax of Nebuchadnezzar's life... his conversion story! Chapter 7 occurs fourth , in the 1st year of Nebuchadnezzar
